Why Watercolor Isn't as Intimidating as You Think

Have you ever looked at a jaw-dropping watercolor painting and thought, "No way I could ever do that!" Trust me, I've been there too. Picture me discovering these mind-blowing watercolor artworks—I mean, seriously, who knew watercolors could do THAT? I always thought they were just for kids, you know? That's why I picked them when I wanted to get back into art. It seemed like the easiest place to start. But boy, was I in for a surprise!

So, there I was, drooling over these amazing watercolor paintings. Excitement took over, and I knew I had to give it a try. Sure, doubts crept in, but my eagerness was far stronger. Honestly, I never expected to paint like a pro from the get-go. I was totally cool with making mistakes and learning along the way. I mean, who was gonna see my early attempts anyway? This was my personal journey, and I'd share my victories when I felt like it.

Now, here's the real deal. We're here to bust that ridiculous myth that watercolor is some unattainable art form for beginners. I've got news for you—everyone starts at the beginning. Yeah, even the pros! Every artist, every genius in their field had to lay down the foundation before they soared to greatness. And let's be honest, the price you pay for being a beginner is just making a bunch of fun and silly mistakes and being ok with it, while you're experimenting and even beyond that. It's all about the journey, my friend.

So, in this blog, we're gonna dig deep into why watercolor is way more accessible and easier to learn than you might think. Remember that old saying, "Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss, you'll land among the stars!" Let me tell you, embracing watercolor and finding the way for a joyful journey has transformed my life, and I can't wait to show you how it can rock your world too!

We've all come across the common notion that watercolor is notoriously difficult to master. Yeah, I won't deny it, there's some truth to that. But let me tell you, it's not all gloom and doom. The real challenge arises when you dive headfirst into the world of watercolor without a clue or a helping hand. Trust me, I've been there. Wasting precious time and hard-earned cash on the wrong supplies is a recipe for frustration, even for the most eager newbie, like me.

I totally get where you're coming from. Trust me, I've been in your shoes, feeling overwhelmed and unsure about diving into the world of watercolor… but I was busy with the excitement of learning this medium too. It's not easy when you don't have someone guiding you through the process. I remember those days of confusion, not knowing which supplies to use, how to mix colors, or even where to begin with essential techniques. I didn't know about warm and cool colors, did you?  I spent hours (granted, I enjoyed it) watching YouTube videos, trying to learn all the things but you can't learn just by consuming.  I found out that when the time came, and I held a paintbrush to paper, so to speak, I was basically like a deer in headlights. lol. I can't stress enough that it takes experience to be one with the knowledge of a thing, anything.  It doesn't matter what it is.  It could be learning a new sport... anything.  You have to do the thing to internalize and know the next steps.

So, full of YouTube wisdom I forged forward, grabbed some supplies that I thought were good, and tried to paint the simplest round object to show depth. But, oh my goodness, it ended up being incredibly frustrating.  Imagine being so excited to open up your supplies and you’re finally painting, and then being so let down and frustrated by it, hitting obstacle after obstacle. I didn’t know what was happening as I tried to do things.  The paints would run, it would look streaky, it just plain completely sucked.  I couldn’t do the simplest things and I had no clue where to go from there.  I was lost and I had no one to ask.  That situation can leave you feeling discouraged and ready to throw in the towel, which I actually did and considered trying to find a different medium to get into… but when I was looking online, the algorithm still saw me as someone that was interested in watercolor so I kept seeing and eventually started looking again at these masterful paintings.

That’s when I realized that I was running on a false belief that an artist is supposed to learn on their own.  I had a breakthrough.  I mean, let’s be real.  Not even Leonardo da Vinci learned drawing perspective all on his own.  The interwebs say his teacher is Andrea del Verrocchio.  I mean, sure, he pursued his interests as we all can once we learn some basic fundamentals, but to say that he completely learned all on his own is a lie.  It’s really the pursuit of a thing that builds us.  Anyway, I might be rambling but my point is I get why and how people might think certain things are meant for others with this “natural talent” but what is really happening under the hood is that they study under others and stay in the joy of it, and pursue what they desire.

So, all that to say that I understand the struggle of not knowing which brushes or paints to choose, or how to make those colors really pop on paper. Believe me, I've made my fair share of mistakes and had my moments of frustration. But now, armed with knowledge and experience, I'm ready to guide you through the watercolor adventure with confidence and ease.  Together, we'll have fun navigating this artistic journey, step by step, making sure you have the right tools, techniques, and support you need to succeed. Trust me when I say that watercolor doesn't have to be frustrating or intimidating. With the right guidance and a dash of creativity, you'll be amazed at what you can achieve.

Let's put this misconception to rest once and for all: watercolor is only hard when you embark on the journey alone. Sure, tackling this medium without any guidance can feel like attempting a puzzle blindfolded. But here's the truth from someone who's been there: watercolor becomes a whole lot easier when you have someone to show you the way.  Think about it. Have you ever learned something new without any instruction or assistance? It's rarely a walk in the park. The same applies to watercolor. When you have the right guidance and support, the seemingly daunting challenges transform into manageable steps towards artistic mastery and you learn faster and cheaper in the long run too. Conclusion: Embrace the Joy of Watercolor with Guided Support
